It is a species of palm native to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It has a solitary, stout stem and can reach heights of 8 to 10 meters, sometimes growing up to 15 meters tall. Its stem diameter is typically 20 to 30 centimeters. There is some debate among botanists about whether A. media is a separate species or a synonym of A. aculeata. In Puerto Rico, it is commonly referred to as coroso or palma de coroso.
