Ilex mucronata, also known as mountain holly or catberry, is a deciduous shrub native to eastern North America. It was previously classified as a monotypic genus, but has since been transferred to the Ilex genus. It is closely related to Ilex amelanchier. This shrub can grow up to 3-4 meters tall and has alternate, simple leaves with serrated edges. Its small flowers are whitish to greenish-yellow and inconspicuous, and it produces red drupes containing three to five pits. Mountain holly thrives in full sun or partial shade and is typically found in moist, acidic soils. It is recommended for use in naturalistic landscapes and is hardy in USDA zones 4-6. It is sometimes confused with the related mountain winterberry, also known as mountain holly.
