Ilex decidua, commonly known as meadow holly, possumhaw, deciduous holly, or swamp holly, is a species of holly native to the United States. It is an upright shrub or small tree that typically grows between 10 and 15 feet tall, though it can grow larger in partial shade. It has light brown to gray bark, slender twigs, and obovate, simple, alternating leaves that are dark green and crenate. From March to May, small white flowers bloom among the leaves and produce small red or yellow drupe fruits that ripen in early autumn. These fruits are a favorite food source of many birds and mammals, and persist on the tree throughout the winter. Ilex decidua is found in the US and northern Mexico, and prefers land in floodplains and the margins of swamps or lakes. It is often used as an ornamental plant, and its branches are sometimes collected for use as Christmas decorations. It is also used to stabilize stream beds or for the banks of water retention ponds.
