Macropanax maingayi is a tree belonging to the Araliaceae family and was first identified as Hederopsis maingayi in 1879 in Malacca. In 1979, it was reclassified by William Raymond Philipson as Macropanax maingayi. This species is native to a large area in Southeast Asia, ranging from Sumatra in Indonesia to Vietnam. However, in a 1990 book, it was mistakenly listed under its old synonym and stated to only exist in Peninsular Malaysia. This error led to the IUCN listing it as a threatened species in 1998, citing urban development and logging as threats to its population.
