Perideridia gairdneri, also known as common yampah, Gardner's yampah, and Squaw root, is a perennial flowering plant native to western North America. It can be found in a variety of habitats, growing up to 1 meter tall from cylindrical tubers. The plant has edible parts, but caution should be taken as it resembles poisonous plants. It was an important food source for Native American groups, including the Blackfoot, Northern Paiute, Cheyenne, and Comanche. The Comanche name for the tuber, yap, is where the term yampa is believed to originate from. The tubers were used for various purposes, including as a staple food, and were also used medicinally. Meriwether Lewis encountered the plant in 1805 and 1806, referring to it as a type of fennel. The plant has different names in different Native American languages, such as cawíitx in Nez Perce and sawítk in Sahaptin.
