Suggest a correction!Oxypolis (Apiaceae, tribe Oenantheae) is a small North American genus comprising two accepted species, O. filiformis (narrow-leaved water-cowbane) and O. rigidior (common cowbane), with an additional variety recognized in some treatments; the name derives from the Greek for “sharp” and “pole,” reflecting the robust habit. The genus is centered in the southeastern United States, where it occupies marshes, wet pinelands, alluvial swales, and floodplain forests from the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains and adjacent Piedmont; O. rigidior extends inland up the Mississippi embayment to Texas and occasionally into southern New England. The type species is O. rigidior (L.) Britton, Sterns & Poggenb. (Weakley et al., 2023).
Morphologically Oxypolis is perennial, glabrous, and deep-rooted; plants bear thickened, fusiform storage roots and erect, glaucous, unbranched to sparingly branched stems. Leaves are simple, linear to oblanceolate, entire, basally sheathing, and often slightly succulent; stipular sheaths are absent. The inflorescence is a compound umbel with numerous primary and secondary rays; involucral bracts are few or absent, involucel bracts are linear and persistent. Flowers are small, the corolla white, sometimes pink-tinged; the calyx is reduced with low teeth. Ovaries are inferior with two carpels; each carpel bears a prominent dorsal rib and two slender lateral ribs; stylopodia are low-conical and persist on the mature fruit. Fruits are schizocarps that split into two mericarps; the mericarps are dorsally compressed with five prominent ribs, the dorsal and two lateral ribs equal and acute, the two commissural ribs smaller.
The diversity of Oxypolis is modest, with centers of diversity in the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plains and marked endemism to wetland and alluvial habitats across a broad latitudinal range from the Carolinas to Texas. Plants flower from late summer to autumn, fruiting as water levels recede; no specialized pollination or dispersal syndromes are well documented, but fruits are likely water- or gravity-dispersed given habitat and morphology.
Within tribe Oenantheae, Oxypolis is placed in a subclade near Tiedemannia and Oenanthe (Spalik et al., 2004; Degtjareva et al., 2006). Historical treatments included O. fendleri and O. ternata, now accepted in Tiedemannia, reflecting former broad circumscriptions; modern treatments restrict Oxypolis to the two widespread coastal-plain species, a change documented in floristic syntheses (Weakley et al., 2023; USDA NRCS, 2024; WFO, 2024). Chromosome counts for O. rigidior have been reported as 2n=22, suggesting x=11, but the number has not been uniformly verified across the genus.
The plants are sporadically used in native landscaping, especially for wet sites, and may occur as minor components of floodplain seed banks; none are cultivated crops, timber species, or recognized invasives.
Conservation concerns focus on the loss and fragmentation of wetland habitats, with O. filiformis and O. rigidior particularly sensitive to hydrological alteration. Continued monitoring of coastal plain wetlands will be essential to forecast changes in the genus’ occupancy.
