The leaves of Rosmarinus officinalis have long been prepared as infusions in Europe, where herbalists note the “cup of rosemary” after meals for digestion and mental freshness (Hippocrates; modern pharmacopoeias), in North Africa, where Morocco’s berbère mint-rosemary tea adds a clarifying herb to the mint brew (Le Floc’h, 1983), and among the Akan of Ghana, where Rosetta africana includes fresh sprigs for scent and stomach comfort (Veitch and Ainaddou, 1995). In southern Europe and Argentina, the aerial parts are also macerated in oil for several weeks to make a light, aromatic massage oil used on aching joints (John Gerard, 1597; modern herbal practice).
One simple recipe is a mild tea. Use about one level teaspoon of dried leaves or two teaspoons of fresh minced leaves per cup of near‑boiling water. Cover and steep five to eight minutes; sip one to two cups daily. Keep the infusion pleasant and drink no more than three cups in a day. For a 1:5 ethanol tincture, pack dried aerial parts lightly in a jar and pour 45% ethanol until covered; macerate in a cool, dark place for two weeks with a daily shake, then strain through fine cloth. A common adult dose is one to two milliliters taken once or twice daily. Although culinary use is safe, concentrated extracts are not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding without guidance; people on anticoagulants should consult a professional because rosemary contains coumarin constituents.
The activity of rosemary preparations is linked to well‑known phytochemicals found across cultivars: rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid for antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory effects, plus camphor and borneol with characteristic aroma. These compounds explain the plant’s traditional roles as a stomach‑soothing and mildly stimulating aromatic, and its widespread use in infusions, macerations, and topical oils.
Today, rosemary leaves and extracts appear in modern culinary products, dietary supplements, and cosmetics, while field studies continue to study antioxidant effects and shelf‑life benefits in foods (Newall et al., 1996).
