Eryngium planum, also known as the blue eryngo or flat sea holly, is a flowering plant found in central and southeastern Europe and central Asia. It is a perennial thistle with silvery-blue stems and small blue flowerheads surrounded by spiky bracts. In European folk medicine, it is used as a diuretic, stimulant, and appetizer due to its essential oils and bioactive compounds. These compounds include phenolic acids, triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, coumarins, and essential oils. Qualitative and quantitative analyses have shown the presence of rosmarinic, chlorogenic, and caffeic acids in the leaves and roots of the plant, with higher concentrations in in vitro cultures. The essential oil compounds consist mainly of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and hydrocarbons, with (Z)-falcarinol being the major component in the root essential oil.
