Eryngium leavenworthii, also known as Leavenworth's eryngo, is a native annual plant in the Apiaceae family found in the central United States. It grows up to 3 feet tall and is commonly found in dry rocky prairies, roadside fields, open woodlands, and waste areas with limestone or chalk soils. Its flowers bloom from July to September, with some areas seeing blooms as late as November. The flowers are 1 1/2" to 3" in length and resemble small fuzzy pineapples in a cone shape. It is often mistaken for thistle and was named after Melines Conklin Leavenworth, who discovered the plant in the 19th century.
