Cicuta maculata, also known as spotted water hemlock, is a highly poisonous flowering plant found in North America. It can grow up to 6 feet tall and has long, serrated leaves and clusters of white flowers. The plant is often mistaken for parsnips, but ingestion of any part of it can be fatal. It is considered the most toxic plant in North America and has caused deaths in both humans and livestock. The main poison in the plant is cicutoxin, which can cause severe symptoms such as convulsions and vomiting within an hour of ingestion. Long-term effects can include retrograde amnesia.
