Potamogeton coloratus, also known as the fen pondweed, is an aquatic plant found in shallow peaty calcareous lakes, ponds, and ditches, commonly associated with lowland fens. It has broad, thin, and translucent leaves with noticeable reticulate veining. The plant produces small greenish flowers in June to July and is diploid with 2n=28. It can be distinguished from other pondweeds by its distinctive net-veined appearance and lack of turions. Fen pondweed is found in Europe, Turkey, and North Africa, and has specialized habitat preferences, making it vulnerable to eutrophication and drainage. It is considered Least Concern globally, but is protected in several countries as it is a characteristic species of fenland habitat. Fen pondweed is not currently in cultivation and may be difficult to grow due to its specialized habitat requirements.
