Potamogeton berchtoldii, also known as small pondweed, is an aquatic plant that is commonly found in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East. It has a fine-leaved appearance and lacks a perennial rhizome, with the plants dying back in winter and forming resting buds known as turions. Its stems are slender and its leaves are flat with a broad band of lacunae along each side of the midrib. It is similar to other Potamogeton species and can be identified by its open stipules and shining nodal glands. Small pondweed is named after the Czech botanist Friedrich von Berchtold and has several subspecies and hybrids. It has a wide ecological tolerance and can be found in various water bodies, including lakes, ponds, and streams. It is a good colonist and can quickly exploit new environments, but may be outcompeted by other plants in stable environments. In Britain, it is common and widespread, but often under-recorded due to its small size and confusion with other species. Small pondweed is not commonly cultivated, but can be grown in ponds or aquariums.
