Posidonia australis, also known as fibre-ball weed or ribbon weed, is a seagrass species found in the southern waters of Australia. It forms large meadows that are important for environmental conservation. The plant has ribbon-like leaves and produces flowers on small spikes. It can reproduce through sexual or asexual methods, and can also grow vegetatively under extreme conditions. A 2013 study showed that it is highly efficient at sequestering carbon. In 2022, a single plant in Shark Bay was reported to be the largest plant in the world, covering an area of 200 square kilometers. This makes it the largest known organism by area, and also one of the oldest clonal plants. The species is a member of the Posidoniaceae family and is named after the god of the seas, Poseidon. It is listed as "near threatened" by the IUCN and its meadows in New South Wales are considered an endangered ecological community.
