Anubias afzelii is a species of plant in the Aroid genus Anubias, first described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1857. It is named after Adam Afzelius, who collected the first known specimen in Sierra Leone. This species is the only one in the genus Anubias and is therefore considered the type species. It is native to West Africa, specifically Senegal, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Mali. Anubias afzelii has large, leathery leaves that grow on a creeping and rooting rhizome. It produces a spathe and spadix, with male flowers on the upper part and female flowers on the lower part. This plant prefers wet, shady environments and flowers from March to July. It is commonly grown in paludariums and larger aquariums, where it grows slowly and does not require much light. It can be propagated by dividing the rhizome or through seed propagation.
