It has white flowers with three petals and three sepals. It is native to northern Europe and Asia, and is often cultivated as an ornamental in aquaria and artificial ponds. It is widespread across much of the Russian Federation, as well as Finland, Sweden, Mongolia, Japan, Korea, Kazakhstan, and China.
