Plants typically arise from thick rhizomes, producing floating or aerial rosettes of long-petioled leaves with entire margins and prominent venation. The inflorescence is an erect, branched panicle bearing numerous small, actinomorphic flowers with three sepals, three white or pinkish petals, and 6-10 stamens. Each flower possesses a superior ovary composed of numerous free carpels arranged in a single ring, characteristic of the family.
