Aesculus californica, also known as the California buckeye or California horse-chestnut, is a large deciduous shrub or small tree native to California and southwestern Oregon. It typically grows up to 4-12 meters tall and has a multi-trunked crown. The leaves are dark green and palmately compound with five or seven leaflets. The flowers are sweet-scented and white to pale pink, and the fruit is a fig-shaped capsule containing a large, poisonous seed. Aesculus californica has adapted to its native Mediterranean climate by growing during the wet winter and spring months and entering dormancy in the dry summer months. It is widely distributed in California and can be found in a variety of habitats, from moist canyon bottoms to dry slopes. The tree has been used by Native American tribes for various purposes, including as a food source after proper preparation. It is also used as an ornamental plant and has the ability to prevent erosion. The scientific name, Aesculus californica, is derived from the old Roman name for horse chestnuts and means "native to California."
