Sorghum timorense, also known as Downs sorghum, is a tropical grass native to the island of Timor and northern regions of Australia. It can grow up to 300 cm tall and has upright or bent culms with few lateral branches. The leaf sheaths are either hairless or slightly hairy, and the ligule lacks cilia. The smooth or lightly hairy leaf blades can be straight or curled, with hairs arising from small bumps. The inflorescence is a panicle with branches that end in a single raceme. The panicle branches are angular or flat and covered in small scabs, with long, weak hairs and enlarged pulvini. The primary branch of the panicle does not have branchlets and bears only a few fertile spikelets. The main stems are straight with cilia on their margins and break easily at the nodes.
