Pachypodium lealii, also known as the bottle tree, is a species of plant found in Namibia and southern Angola. It was named after Portuguese geologist Fernando da Costa Leal, who discovered it during an exploration in the 19th century. This plant can grow up to 6 meters tall and has a thick, bottle-shaped trunk with few branches covered in long thorns. Its leaves are oblong and covered in short hairs. The white flowers, which bloom in the spring, are clustered at the tips of the branches. The plant produces a toxic latex that is used by local populations as arrow poison. Pachypodium lealii is found in semi-desert areas and dry bushvelds, particularly in the Etendeka plateau of NE Namibia. It can tolerate extreme temperatures ranging from -10°C to 45°C. While it is not currently under significant threat, the removal of wild plants for trade is a concern. Pachypodium lealii is listed on Appendix II of CITES, making it illegal to trade internationally without a permit.
