Elingamita is a genus of plants in the Primulaceae family, consisting of a single species, Elingamita johnsonii. This tree or shrub is found only on the Three Kings Islands, located north of New Zealand. Its natural population is confined to a small rocky island and two nearby islets, making it vulnerable to potential destruction. Elingamita johnsonii grows in pohutukawa forests and coastal scrub, and is also found on two rocky islets. Its relationship to other genera in the Primulaceae family is still being studied. The plant was named after a shipwreck in 1902 and its fruits are known to be palatable to rats. Elingamita johnsonii has large, glossy, dark-green leaves and produces distinctive red fleshy fruits. It can be propagated from seeds or cuttings, and is sensitive to cold and frost. In gardens, it makes for a beautiful specimen tree in frost-free areas.
